Makeup wonderings

I go on tangents a lot, usually because I’ve just had a number of experiences with whatever I’m talking about. Well, today it is about makeup.

  • ULTA is opening soon! ---As you know, we are finally getting an ULTA in Tyler. Yay! I’m patiently waiting for it to open, and drive by every once in a while to check on its progress. (Lame! I know.) It is going to open soon! My prediction is in November, just in time for Holiday shopping! If you want to work there (who wouldn’t want a discount?), apply here!
  • Cleaning out your make up drawer is a fresh new look on your makeup!---I’ve been redecorating my bathroom, which some how means switching around drawers and products. Anyway, this led me to cleaning and moving my makeup drawer. I wear mineral powder makeup, which gets all over and I have more palette eye shadows that break for no reason, all leaving my makeup drawer pretty dirty. So I got out the Lysol and went to cleaning last night. In the process, I cleaned out my makeup, throwing away expired, broken, and empty products! Now my drawer is clean and sparkly. I’m looking forward to putting on my own makeup again after seeing what I actually have. Here’s what it looks like all clean!
  • Nice Customer Service is wonderful! ---So this isn’t so much to do with makeup as customer service, but it started with makeup! I’m am absolute lover of Bare Minerals make up (proud wearer for 1 ½ years! Woo-hoo!) So when I got a coupon in Glamour last month, I went ahead and ordered my base. Well it came yesterday and of course my luck. I was one shade off when I ordered and got a light color than normal. So I called their hotline to see about returns. The automated menu offered to speak to a “Beauty assistant”. My first thought was, “Stupid”, then “Why not?! What could it hurt?” I talked for about 7 minutes to an assistant, regardless of the conversation; she was nice, polite, and very helpful! She definitely helped me in my makeup questions. It is just refreshing to have a positive customer service experience. Just another reason to love my Bare Minerals!

Ok, I’m done with my musings about makeup. What are yours? Are you excited about ULTA??? When was the last time you cleaned/cleaned out your makeup drawer?

The Death of a Heel

It’s a sad dreary day in more ways than one! I live in the South where we are experiencing mass amounts of rain. Every time I look out the window, rain, rain, and rain! Now normally I don't mind the rain because I have an umbrella, rain boots, and/or coat. Today was not one of those days. I didn't expect the sky to open; I expected sprinkles, so I dressed cute in heels, pants, and cardi.

As I went to the grocery store during lunch, I managed to step in a puddle near the door that was mid-calf deep, soaking my heels and the bottom ¼ of my pants. It was literally as if I dunked my feet into a bath. When I got under covering, I had to take off my black patent pumps and pour out the water. Normally, I’m very careful about what shoes I wear when it’s raining so as not to soak them. Today was just a freak accident.

These heels are soaked completely through. In between the lining, padding, everywhere. So I’ve taken them off for now, hoping against hope they will dry out and be ok. But I’m pretty sure they are dead. Too waterlogged to continue!! And this pair is in my top 5 of favorite shoes! *sigh* Hope for the best, but in the mean time I’m going to search for some new ones, just in case!

What happened when your favorite shoes were ruined? Are they replaceable?

As seasons change, I change others things too! Do you?

As seasons change, more than just the weather switches, we all wear to warmer clothes in darker tones and colors, makeup palettes change from dewy skin to a more matte finish, less bronzer more blush, and richer jewel toned eye shadows and nail color.

Well, same goes for my hair. I don’t really plan it but somehow, my hair changes with the seasons. As winter fades to spring/summer, my hair usually gets lighter with highlights, and as summer fades to fall/winter, my hair usually gets darker with the help of my preferred hair dye.

So a few days ago I made my transition to fall/winter with 6WNLight Chocolate Brown/Nonstop Chocolate by Clairol’s Perfect 10. I’ll admit it was darker than I expected, but I’m loving the color and getting more used it. Here’s my transformation:

The hunt is on for the elusive, PBP!

Hunting season has started, but I'm not looking for any cute furry/feathery animals. What I'm searching for is of the clothing variety ( a MUST-HAVE) but very hard to find. I'm searching for the Perfect Black Pant (PBP).

Does anyone else have this problem? I have 2 pairs right now. One is too long to wear flats with; this drives me insane. The other pair is so loose in the waist that I have to wear a belt but I have to pull them up so high it looks stupid with any belt. Instead, I've been wearing dresses and skirts, but I'm getting tired of shaving my legs every day.

So I'm looking for new black pants that are a reasonable price. I've spent more than I wanted before at The New York and Co. and was completely disappointed when those expensive pants basically fell apart. So I'm not going there again. Anyway, I actually despise this shopping activity because its so hard to find the exact right pair.
Maybe these below will work?
Where do you get your PBP? Do you have this problem?

Does your hair really matter? I believe it does.

Within the past year a big focus has come upon African-American women’s hair. Michelle Obama’s hair has especially garnered a lot of attention! This article, “Why Michelle Obama’s Hair Matters” on Yahoo! News caught my attention, opened my eyes and made me think. When Tyra Bank’s talk show premiered in September, she decided to reveal her “real hair” and declared September 8th National Real Hair Day. Even Chris Rock is in on this. His daughter asked him, “Daddy, how come I don't have good hair?” which led him on a journey (which will be his new movie-Good Hair) to find the answer.

Now why would I really find this fascinating?

Because, as it said in the Yahoo! Article, “hair has classification power.” Think about it? I think this discussion has more to do than just with African-American women’s hair, though those thoughts, truths, and history are extremely intriguing to me. It has to do with every woman.

Hair is an important part of every girl’s life. It matters! Every woman’s hair, no matter the color of skin or hair, has a true significance in her life at some point or another. She could love it or hate but at that point it made a difference on how it looked and affected her.

Colors and textures are stereotyped. If you are blonde, you are dumb. Brunettes can be boring. Red heads have a temper. Curly hair means you are wild. And “braids, twists, afros, etc”[Yahoo] all come with their own stereotypes. “From long and straight to short and kinky - and, of course, good and bad - these terms become shorthand for desirability, worthiness and even worldview.” [Yahoo] Hair defines some women. Tyra was known for her different weaves as much as her modeling. Jennifer Aniston could not snip a strand without it being the next big thing. Would Megan Fox be as sexy without her long dark tresses? Macy Gray wouldn’t seem herself without her afro? Hair plays a bigger part of your life than you think?

Do you truly know your “real hair”? Without dyes, weaves, perms, any kind of heated tool, fake hair, or any kind of product in it, do you know what it looks and feels like?

The past year, I have been in a fight with my hair to figure out what exactly type it is, and what works best. And though I still haven’t quite figured it out, the main discovery is that my hair is wavy in parts and straight in others and likes to do what it wants. Just like a snowflake, no type of hair is the same. During my teen years, I damaged and dried my hair out with the help of a hair dryer and flat iron every day. This past summer I cut off all the damaged hair deciding that my hair and I would start anew. I have a feeling its going to be a long journey. I can’t quite bring myself to give up dying it, which I know has a big effect on the texture.

But all of this focus on “real” hair sure has made me think. I write this post to start a healthy discussion about hair and how it can affect you. Nothing more.

Do you know your “real hair”? Are you stereotyped for your hair? Do you care? Let me know!

One-Long Sleeve Dresses, hit or miss or awful?

Last night I was watching Dancing with the Stars, not a normal activity since Gossip Girl is my #1 monday show, and noticed an odd outfit.
And it wasn't on a dancer!!
It was on Samantha Harris, she's the host who interviews the dancers backstage. She had on a one-shoulder long dress, ok, but the other sleeve was down to her wrist. I stared every time she came on just because it looked odd. Then, I remembered Kim Kardashian sported this look in dazzling white at the Emmys a few weeks ago.
The one shoulder dress is kinda cool, but I'm not feeling this long-sleeve one-shoulder trend. Seems odd to me...like they forgot to sew the other one on....
hmm...
What do you think? Would you wear a dress with one long sleeve?

Shine Beauty Guru Review: Olay Regenerist Anti-Aging Eye Roller

As a Shine Beauty Guru, I get sent products to review. For September, we were sent Olay Regenerist products. I chose the Anti-Aging Eye Roller. Here is my review:

When I think about skincare, wrinkles and fine lines are usually the last thing I consider. I mean I'm 23 and shouldn't have too many wrinkles yet right? So when I picked up the Olay Regenerist Anti-Aging Eye Roller to test as a Shine Beauty Guru, I was really skeptical. But what could it hurt? I mean it does promise that it helps "reduce eye puffiness, but also regenerate skin's appearance to diminish fine lines and wrinkles." [Olay]

So diligently for the past 2 weeks, after washing my face before bed, I used it. The "tool" itself is just a little bigger than my mascara tube. With one click, the cream is gently massaged into the skin. After the recommended 30 seconds on each eye, I was left with cool (the rollers were a little cold!) refreshed, dewy skin.

I didn't notice an instant effects. But my eyes sure did feel good after the initial application! I kept applying and enjoying. One no-makeup day, I glanced in the mirror as I passed by and had to do a double take. I looked close up and was shocked. My eyes didn't look puffy or dark or wrinkly! They really did seem to look rejuvenated. I would have gladly gone out with no makeup on because my face, mainly eyes looked amazing! My only thoughts were, "WOW!"

I am thrilled with the results. Happily, I'll be fighting off wrinkles for years to come with this!

For about $23 a pop, seems like it wouldn't be worth it. But that little tube holds tons more than you would expect! Mine should last me about 2 months. Lasting so long it makes it worth the price. I'll be buying it again!

P.S. I found it at CVS Online for $21.99. Have you used it? What did you think?

P.S.S. I LOVE OLAY!
